Mass for deceased clergy
A Mass to pray for deceased clergy was celebrated at St George’s Cathedral
A Mass, celebrated by Archbishop John Wilson, was held at St George’s Cathedral for deceased clergy in the Archdiocese of Southwark.
Speaking about the deceased clergy, Archbishop John said “we give thanks to God for their witness, their faith, their generosity, their love”. The Archbishop said: “in a small way we repay that by remembering them in our prayers, and especially in the Mass: the sacrifice of forgiveness for sins, of mercy and hope, which we offer for the living and the dead”.
Archbishop John read out the names of the clergy the Archdiocese has lost this year:
- Father Patrick Moloney
- Deacon Charlie Bianco
- Deacon Dennis Barrett
- Father David Standley
- Father Barry Hughes
- Canon Michael Cooley
- Father James Furlong
- Canon Jeremiah Anthony Cronin
- Father Jesus Dicto
The Archbishop said “in remembering our brothers, we turn to the Lord in faith: praying for them. And asking for them and for us the gift of forgiveness and of peace”.
The homily was preached by Canon Gerard Bradley, who said in some ways “the most evangelical thing you can do” is to “offer Mass for the dead”. This is because of the promise of Heaven, which the Lord Jesus offers us all.
