Cathedral Finance Officer

Job Type- Full Time, Monday- Friday, 35 hours per week. This is an office based role in London (SE1).

Salary Range-  £30,000-£32,000 per annum, dependant on skills and experience

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark covers a large geographical area including all of London south of the Thames and all of Kent. Within the Archdiocese the financing of Church activities is associated with 175 parishes, 170 schools and a number of central agencies involved with education, youth work, safeguarding and other specialised functions. The Archdiocese is a charitable incorporated company (CIO), managed by a Trustee Board comprising clerical and lay Trustees.

This role sits within St. George’s Cathedral which has been the mother church for the Archdiocese of Southwark for 175 years– now numbering 178 parishes – and the seat of our Archbishop. 

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join a great team managing the day-to-day financial administration activities of the Cathedral and Amigo Hall, including (but not limited to) processing invoices, maintaining records of all financial transactions, including managing and updating the AIQ Finance system, internal controls, book keeping activities and credit control, as well as other admin related tasks. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure that all regular financial activity such as invoice payments, internal control accounts reconciliations are undertaken in a timely and accurate manner with responsibility for the booking system
  • Create and update spreadsheets of daily transactions
  • Ensure that all finance data is kept up-to-date
  • To support the Cathedral Administrator as needed but especially in relation to financial and numerical activities
  • Work closely with the Cathedral Team/Administrator to ensure that event costs are budgeted and processed accordingly
  • Identify and address account discrepancies
  • Prepare the Cathedral’s monthly and annual financial reports
  • Maintain month end reconciliations including bank and supplier statements

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will:

  • Proven work experience as a Finance Administrator, Finance Assistant or similar role (within a not-for-profit or corporate organisation of reasonable size and ideally with a branch structure would be advantageous)
  • Hands-on experience with accounting software
  • Excellent IT skills and knowledge of MS Excel (creating spreadsheets and charts and using financial Excel functions)
  • Ideally a qualified bookkeeper or alternatively significant bookkeeping experience
  • Time-management and organisation skills
  • Have an excellent customer service ethos and communication skills at all levels
  • The ability to handle confidentiality and sensitive data
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Methodical and accurate with an excellent attention to detail
  • The successful candidate will also have to demonstrate an empathy with the religious nature of the organisation and develop a thorough understanding of the specific workings of the Catholic Church
