Diaconate Ordinations 2026
Photos and homily from the ordination of James Gurney and Peter Julien to the Permanent Diaconate
Archbishop John Wilson ordained James Gurney and Peter Julien to the Permanent Diaconate on Saturday 31 October at St George’s Cathedral.
Deacon James and Deacon Peter were joined by their families, loved ones and friends for their joyful ordination.
In his homily, Archbishop John said:
“Dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Dear James and dear Peter: my brothers and my sons. With joy and gratitude, we gather to witness these men, our brothers, being ordained to the diaconate for service in the Church of our Archdiocese
“Peter and James, by the laying on of hands and the gift of the Holy Spirit, you are to be configured to Christ, the servant. We give thanks that God has called you and that you have responded. We give thanks for your wives and your families, for all those who have accompanied you and formed you. Above all, we give thanks to Christ for providing for his people.”
Permanent Deacons are ordained men called by God to serve the Church in the ministries of Word, Altar and Charity. On this call to serve, Archbishop John said:
“Today, James and Peter, the Church entrusts to you a precious gift and a sacred responsibility. So stay close to Christ in prayer. Love the Scriptures that you proclaim now in a new way. Be devoted to the altar where you will serve, especially at the Eucharist. Be attentive to those in need, in whom Christ waits to be loved. Support your own families with gratitude, with generosity, and let it overflow to others. Serve God's people. Be humble. Be joyful.
“Never forget this: it is the Lord who sent you today. You belong to him in a new way. So have confidence as he sends you forth.
“Through the intercession of Our Blessed Lady, through your Patron Saints, through all the Holy Deacons of the Church. May your lives reflect the mystery you are about to receive, a share in the servant love of Christ. Amen."
Please pray that Deacon James and Deacon Peter remain faithful to their calling and serve the Lord Jesus and his Church with humility, compassion and love.
