Tunbridge Wells Deanery children’s Bible quiz

Inspiring young people to study Scripture

A Bible Quiz was held on Saturday, 4th July, at St Lawrence the Martyr Church, Edenbridge, organised by the Parish Priest, Fr Vipin James. The event brought together 23 children (ages 7-14) from the Tunbridge Wells Deanery, encouraging them to deepen their knowledge of Sacred Scripture while making friends and building community.

It was based on the Gospel of Mark, chapters 9–16, and conducted by Elizabeth Kate Kelleher, a parishioner of Edenbridge, who also prepared all the questions. Six teams representing parishes from Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks (2 teams), Edenbridge and Pembury took part.

After the final round, four were tied with equal points. A tie-break question gave the first prize to St Augustine’s Church (Tunbridge Wells). Prizes were given to the tied teams from St Thomas’ Church (Sevenoaks) and St Anselm’s Church (Pembury). The ones that finished fourth and fifth were separated by only four points, reflecting the high standard of the competition.

The winning teams received copies of the Book of the Gospels, along with vouchers for mini golf and bowling. All participants received a gift in recognition of their enthusiasm and participation. After the quiz, the children enjoyed a barbecue, prepared by Brother David Howard (Knights of St Columba), refreshments and games.

This initiative came about after the success of a Youth Day held last summer. The aim was to have the children read and become more familiar with the Bible. The parents shared that preparing for the quiz led their families to begin reading the Word of God more regularly. The plan is that this will become an annual event within the Tunbridge Wells Deanery and, in time, inspire similar Bible-based programmes throughout the Archdiocese.
