Archbishop John expresses deep gratitude on Education Sunday
Archbishop John gives thanks for teachers, staff and parents whose daily dedication forms young people in the knowledge and love of Christ
Archbishop John Wilson has thanked teachers, school staff, parents and carers across the Archdiocese in a pastoral message marking Education Sunday (13 September 2026).
In his message, Archbishop John praised "the teachers and the staff in our schools who work tirelessly to ensure our young people receive the very best Catholic education." He said this education prepares pupils:
"for their future careers, but most importantly, it draws them into a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus, so that they can grow in wisdom, knowledge and holiness."
Reflecting on the dedication of school leaders, he added:
"I know how hard our headteachers, teachers and staff work to put their pupils first and give them the tools they need to flourish. For that, I once again express my sincerest gratitude and assure you of my prayers."
The Archbishop also recognised the wider network of people who support Catholic education, including the CEOs of Catholic Academy Trusts, governors, chaplains, office teams and volunteers, thanking them for helping schools "live out their Catholic values and nurture our young people."
He paid particular tribute to parents and carers, describing their daily sacrifices as "a witness of love" that lays the foundations for all education, and stressed the importance of a strong partnership between home and school, rooted in Christ.
