St Mary's Catholic High School Celebrates 175 Years
Mass of Thanksgiving, Remembrance and Hope
St Mary's Catholic High School, Croydon, marked the beginning of its 175th anniversary celebrations with a special Mass of Thanksgiving, Remembrance and Hope on Wednesday 4 November 2026, presided over by Canon Victor Darlington, Episcopal Vicar for Education.
As the oldest continuously serving school in the Archdiocese of Southwark and one of England's oldest Catholic schools, St Mary's welcomed pupils, staff, governors, alumni and invited guests to celebrate its remarkable heritage and enduring commitment to Catholic education.
In his homily, Canon Victor reflected on the school's motto, Fidem Serva ('Keep the Faith'), recalling its humble beginnings with just eight pupils, a headmistress and a priest. He praised the generations whose faith and dedication had enabled the school to flourish, encouraging today's pupils to carry forward its values of Welcome, Hard Work and Service.
The Mass was also an occasion for remembrance, honouring former members of the school community and, particularly, Daud, a Year 11 pupil who had recently died. His family joined the celebration as the school remembered his life with affection and prayer.

Looking to the future, Canon Victor blessed the newly appointed Head Boy and Head Girl, presenting them with their blazers of office. He also recognised Year 11 pupil Sandra, whose artwork had been selected as the school's entry for an Archdiocesan competition.

Bringing together generations of the St Mary's family, the celebration offered a fitting beginning to the anniversary year, honouring 175 years of faith, education and service while looking ahead with gratitude and hope.
May God continue to bless St Mary's and all who contribute to its continuing story.
